Nevada Had a Record Number of Pedestrian Deaths in 2024
For 112 people in Nevada, 2024 was their last year. They weren’t behind the wheel or recklessly speeding down highways. They were simply walking, crossing streets, heading home from work, or making their way through intersections when a driver’s negligence turned fatal.
Last year was the deadliest on record for pedestrians in the Silver State, which surpassed the previous high of 107 in 2023. According to Zero Fatalities Nevada, the trend is only getting worse. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas' Road Equity Alliance Project, which focuses on reducing pedestrian deaths, confirmed that 2024 saw the highest number of pedestrian fatalities ever recorded in the state.
The majority of these pedestrian accident fatalities happened in Clark County, where high traffic volumes and fast-moving vehicles put walkers at constant risk. Pedestrians are already vulnerable as it is. They don't have the same protection (e.g., airbags, seatbelts, and vehicle safety features) as motorists do. After being hit by a car, they're far more likely to sustain serious and life-threatening injuries.
What's causing the increase in Nevada pedestrian deaths?
Pedestrians weren’t the only ones impacted by the rising danger on Nevada’s roads. Traffic fatalities overall increased by 6% in 2024, with a total of 412 deaths. Whether it was a pedestrian crossing the street, a motorcyclist trying to make it home, or a driver on their morning commute, too many people lost their lives. State officials point to the same recurring culprits: speeding and impaired driving.
These statistics represent parents, children, and friends. A decade ago, in 2013, pedestrian deaths in Nevada stood at 65. Since then, that number has climbed almost every year, reaching 83 in 2022 and then shattering records in 2023 and 2024.
Where were the most pedestrian deaths?
While some areas in Nevada saw a decline in pedestrian deaths, others faced an alarming rise. Washoe County offered a glimmer of hope, with a 28% drop in fatalities, which is down to 13 pedestrian deaths in 2024 from 18 the year before. But Clark County told a different story. Here, pedestrian deaths jumped 14%, reaching 95. That means nearly 85% of Nevada’s pedestrian fatalities happened in one county alone.
Other counties saw fewer but still tragic losses:
- Carson City: 1 fatality (down from 2 in 2023).
- Humboldt: 1 fatality (up from 0 in 2023).
- Lyon and Nye: 1 fatality each (unchanged from 2023).
The remaining 11 Nevada counties reported no pedestrian deaths.
Motorcyclists also face increasing dangers on Nevada roads
It wasn’t just pedestrians at risk; motorcyclists faced a deadly year as well. Nevada saw an alarming 28% jump in motorcycle fatalities, with 82 deaths in 2024 compared to 64 in 2023. Washoe County’s motorcyclist fatalities spiked 63%, climbing from 8 to 13. In Clark County, 61 motorcyclists died in 2024, a 22% increase from the previous year.
State officials warn that many of these fatal motorcycle accidents were caused by drivers misjudging an approaching motorcycle’s speed, failing to see its single headlight, or simply not paying attention. A split-second decision to turn in front of a rider often becomes a death sentence.
