Speeding leads to more deadly car accidents in Nevada
Nevada experienced a welcome trend at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. With fewer people on the state’s roads, state officials reported a decline in fatalities.
Unfortunately, the trend is over. Officials say some drivers took advantage of less traffic during the pandemic by driving at excessive speeds or while impaired. They say those deadly habits have continued as more motorists return to their traffic routines, leading to an increase in fatal crashes.
To put it bluntly, state officials are fed up. They are targeting drivers who break traffic laws – speeders, in particular.
“People know not to speed,” said Andrew Bennett with the office of traffic safety in Las Vegas. “We educate rather thoroughly on how not to speed. Sometimes the only thing that will keep people honest is seeing red and blue lights in the rear-view mirror. You will get caught. You will get prosecuted.”
How to protect yourself from speeding accidents
The police cannot be everywhere, of course, They encourage motorists to report speeding and other reckless driving. Other common-sense advice includes:
- Move over from the left lane when someone wants to pass, to avoid encouraging dangerous behavior.
- Give speeding drivers plenty of room because they are more likely to lose control of their vehicles.
- Use safe judgment to avoid speeding vehicles that are tailgating you or trying to goad you into risky driving.
How to protect your rights after a car accident
No matter how carefully you drive, however, you can still be the victim of a careless motorist. If you have been injured in an accident caused by another driver, you may be recovering from serious injuries and facing major medical bills. You may be unable to work and support your family.
One thing is certain: The other driver is not going to admit any responsibility for the accident. They will, in fact, probably blame you for your injuries. An insurance company, knowing you are desperate for money and wanting to protect its own bottom line, will make you a lowball settlement offer that is tempting, even though it comes nowhere close to compensating you for all of your expenses.
